"Duckbill" Gate Holdbacks are designed to catch your gate as it swings open and hold it in that position. Their operation is simple - when the gate is opening, it pushes the lever attached to the duckbill down until it clears it. The weight of the duckbill then springs the lever back up, trapping the gate in the open position. To release the gate, you simply raise the duckbill with your foot, which pushes the lever back down enough for the gate to swing back open.
