    Description

A little history of this vintage hotel:.
This once hotel/casino was built in 1947. It was the first Skyscraper built in Western United States since WWII. It was twelve stories; {noted along with the Fairmont Hotel} considered the tallest building in Nevada until 1956. In the 50's and 60's it became the premier hotel in Reno. Many celebrities stayed there, including Marilyn Monroe. Montgomery Cliff, and Clark gable, among others. The Sky Room at the top of the Mapes was a famous nightclub and stage for such people as Frank Sinatra, and Milton Berle. It was also a place for the many guests when the shooting for the TV series Bonanza took place. Mapes thrived through the 60's and 70's; but began having problems with the more modern casino//hotels that were built in Reno.  The Mapes closed in 1982 because of financial difficulties. Hotel was owned by many but was allowed to decay; this was despite being listed as a National Registry of Historic Places  as  "Most Endangered Site". Even with this, the Historic Trust would not help the Reno city, despite their preservation efforts. Every Engineering report came to the conclusion that the Mapes was actually poorly constructed. In  light  of the evidence, the City of Reno contracted it's demolition on Super Bowl of 2000. Nothing was done with the lot until winter of 2001 when the site was turned into an ice rink . The Site has since become an outdoor rink, along with a park, and elaborate art display from Burning Man.
